Important Note on Practical Assessment:
This is a blended learning qualification. The course consists of an online theory module that you can complete at your own pace, followed by a mandatory face-to-face practical session. During this session, a qualified instructor will assess your ability to apply the learned principles safely and effectively in real-world scenarios.

Course Modules / Curriculum

1. Legislation and Legal Responsibilities
An introduction to key legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, MHOR, LOLER, and PUWER, and understanding your duties as a carer.
2. Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Ergonomics
Learn how the musculoskeletal system works, the common causes of injury, and how to apply ergonomic principles to protect your body.
3. Conducting a Risk Assessment (TILEO Framework)
Master the TILEO (Task, Individual, Load, Environment, Other factors) framework to assess and mitigate risks before moving a person.
4. Principles of Safe Moving and Handling
Explore the core principles of safe practice, including maintaining a stable base, communication with the individual, and avoiding hazardous techniques.
5. Using Equipment for Moving People Safely
Practical guidance on the selection and safe use of handling equipment, such as mobile hoists, ceiling track hoists, slings, and slide sheets.
6. Assisting People to Move (Practical Techniques)
Learn and practice a variety of common manoeuvres, including sitting up, standing, walking, and transferring a person from a bed to a chair.
7. Controversial and Unsafe Techniques
Identify and understand why certain historical or intuitive techniques (like the 'drag lift') are dangerous and must be avoided.

Concludes with a multiple-choice theory test to assess your knowledge and a practical observation to assess your skills.
